Le Mongous. Buff. Lemur Mongoz. Linn.
Paris. 1797-1800. - Color intaglio print with added handcolor, image approximately 14 1/2 x 9 inches on sheet size 20 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches. Scattered foxing, faint toning to edges; otherwise very good condition. An exquisitely detailed image of the Mongoose lemur. Plate 1re. from Histoire Naturelle des Singes et des Makis by Jean Baptiste Audebert, published between 1797-1800. This was Audebert's first individually issued publication, and he lavished attention on the plates which were printed with a color printing method he apparently devised, incorporating stipple engraving. S. Peter Dance notes in "The Art of Natural History" that "zoological art in France [had at this time] an overall uniformity and distinction that was not equalled elsewhere."
