Finely bound by Hering in contemporary tan calf, black morocco labels, elaborate decoration to spines gilt in compartments separated by raised bands, rules gilt to boards with cornerpieces, marbled endpapers and edges. Owner's library stamp in blind to bottom front blanks, some occasional light foxing and browning, an excellent set. Engraved portraits. A handsomely bound library set. Hume's history was first published in 1754-62, Smollett's continuation in 1758 and Hughes' continuation in 1834.
