The Conquest of Everest (Inscribed By Edmund Hillary)
Dutton, New York 1954 - Light rubbing, bumping and shelfwear to blue and beige boards. Spine sound and hinges tight. Interior tight. Rear free endpaper has handwritten page references and notations, most in ink, a few in pencil. The front free endpaper has owner's name and date (in ink) and the inscription "To Stew Keate, with pleasant memories of our stay in Victoria, E.P. Hillary". On front endpaper is a rust mark from paperclip which was use to attach a programme from an event called "The Ascent of Everest" held at the Victoria, British Columbia Memorial Arena on March 8, 1954. The interior of this program is signed by the four pictured participants: Edmond Hillary, Charles Evans, George Lowe, and James Morris. On reading the programme, the seller notices that the Chairman is listed as Stuart Keate, Publisher, Victoria Daily Times, who is presumably the Stew Keate of the inscription. (Perhaps he always resented the misspelling of his name, and discarded the book.) The programme will be included with the book. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
