Societatis Jesu, Leopoli 1740 - Two works in one volume in-2, [11] ff, 529 pp, [11] ff; [2], 175 pp. Cont. calf backed boards, two paper labels (leather worn and warmed on the top of the spine, boards frayed at extremities, top board slightly deformed; internally some foxing, few candle stains, manuscript exlibris on the title page (Collegii B???). In the year 1722 an Afghan army led by Pashtun chieftain Mahmud marched across eastern Iran, besieged and took Isfahan. Mahmud proclaimed himself 'Shah' of Persia effectively ending Safavid dynasty. The events were witnessed by Polish jesuit Tadeusz Krusinski (1675-1751) who described them in the work published here for the fist time by the author himself. Early editions mentioned in the title are "Histoire de la dernière révolution de Perse" by Jean-Antoin du Cerceau in French; "Tarih-i seyyah der beyan-i zuhur-i Agvaniyan ve sebeb-i inhidam-i bina-i devlet-i Sahan-i Safeviyan" in Turkish, the third book of Müteferrika press; "Chronicon peregrinationis, seu Historia ultimi belli Persarum cum Aghwanis gesti" (Leipzig, 1731) in Latin. The second book, a kind of intoduction translated by Krusinski from Turkish, are memoirs by Durry-effendi, the envoy of Turkish sultan Achmed III (firs edition Leopolis, 1734). Very rare.
