1240 - (ILLUMINATED LEAF). Illuminated leaf from a Medieval Bible. England, circa 1240. Single vellum leaf, measuring 8-1/4 by 10 inches, scribed in black ink, illuminated in red and blue inks. Floated with red satin matt and window framed, entire piece measures 15-1/2 by 14 inches. $2500.Large illuminated leaf from a 13th-century English Bible, scribed in Latin and taken from Leviticus 2-11, with eight one-line initials, eight one-line numerals, a heading, and elaborate scrollwork, all in red and blue.This leaf from an English bible, circa 1240, with text from Leviticus 2-11 detailing the procedures for various offerings and reinforcing prohibited actions such as the handling of unclean things. It is scribed in two columns of Latin, each containing 58 lines of text in black ink with red accents. There are eight red and blue one-line initials and eight red and blue one-line Roman numerals as well as a heading executed similarly. There is also some unusual decorative work in the same colors. The verso is similar. Very nearly fine condition.
