Travels of Bertrandon de la Brocquiere. to Palestine
1807 - DE LA BROCQUIERE, Bertrandon. The Travels of Bertrandon de la Brocquiere, Counsellor & First Esquire-Carver to Philippe le Bon, Duke of Burgundy, to Palestine, and His Return from Jerusalem Overland to France, During the Years 1432 & 1433. [England]: At the Hafod Press, by James Henderson, 1807. Tall octavo, 20th-century three-quarter vellum, red morocco spine label. $1500.First edition in English of this combined Middle Eastern travel narrative and comprehensive investigation of international relations between the Ottoman Empire and its allies, written to support the commencement of the Crusades, with double-page engraved map of Tartary, handsomely bound. At the instruction of the Duc de Bourgogne, la Brocquiere undertook a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in order to investigate whether Europe could be liberated from Ottoman rule. This work offers a critical assessment of the relations between the Turks, Greeks, and their allies during the period in question. Furthermore, it urges the French, English, and Germans to band together as a unified force to overthrow the Ottoman Empire. La Brocquiere thus became the authoritative Western voice in support of the Crusades. This work was originally written in manuscript and then subsequently extracted from the original volume in the National Library at Paris and put into modern French by M. le Grand D'Aussy. This is the first edition in English, translated by Thomas Johnes. Light foxing to interior. A near-fine copy. [Attributes: First Edition]
