XII ????????, ???? ???????????? ? ????? ????????? ??????? ???? ?????? ?????????. [The Tale of Igor's Campaign].
I. Baikov Skt. Peterburg 1813 - Octavo (19.5 x 11.8 cm). Title, 37 pp. Modern red sheep, date in gilt to upper cover, original wrappers bound in. Very rare and early poetic interpretation of this great piece of Ancient Rus literature; an excellent copy with original wrappers preserved. The manuscript text of the Tale of Igor's Campaign was first discovered in the library of a Yaroslavl monastery by Alexey Musin-Pushkin in 1795. This historical manuscript, with claims suggesting it dated to the 12th century, created a stir in Russian literary circles, as the tale represented the earliest Slavonic language writing, without any element of Church Slavonic. Musin-Pushkin made a transcription of the manuscript for the empress Catherine the Great in 1795 or '96 and published the text in 1800 with the help of Alexey Malinovskiy and Nikolai Bantysh-Kamenskiy. The original manuscript is thought to have burned in the great Moscow fire of 1812 during the Napoleonic occupation, together with Musin-Pushkin's entire library. Absence of the original source of the text created many disputes around its authenticity and accuracy of the Musin-Pushkin's printed version. The first attempt to interpret the Tale into the modern Russian language using verse was made in 1803, but it was this Levitskiy's version that was later chosen by N. Blanchard to serve the basis for the first French translation of the epic (Moscow, 1823). Alexander Pushkin also held a copy of this 1813 edition in his library. Very rare: we could locate only one copy at public holdings outside Russia - at the National library of Slovenia. Sopikov 8723; Modzalevskiy, Biblioteka A.S. Pushkina 210; not in SK XIX.
