The Review of Reviews Company, New York 1904 - THEODORE ROOSEVELT (1858-1919) Book SIGNED "Theodore Roosevelt" as President, on a bookplate affixed to the front paste down of Volume II (also referred to inside as Part Two) of his two volume "The Naval War of 1812", 299 pages, 5.5" x 8". Top gilt edged. Lettering in gilt on spine. Very Good condition. Half red cloth with attractive marbled cream colored boards.Bookplate, 3" x 4", depicting the Seal of Columbia University at top center. Text: "Presented to the / Roosevelt Library / in the / University of Berlin / by." Signature as President in ink "Theodore Roosevelt" scuffed partially on three letters.Theodore Roosevelt had graduated from Harvard in 1880. While attending Columbia Law School, he continued his research on a book he had started while still at Harvard. He finished it in December 1881: his first book, The Naval War of 1812. In an article datelined Berlin, July 20 [1907], The New York Times reported on the visit of Prof. John W. Burgess, Dean of Columbia University, to Germany. In part, "As a souvenir of his visit he has established the Roosevelt Library at the University of Berlin, to which, it was announced this week, President Roosevelt has presented an autograph set of his own literary works ."Photocopy of The New York Times article quoted is present. "The American soldiers deserve great credit for doing so well; but greater credit still belongs to Andrew Jackson, who, with his cool head and quick eye, his stout heart and strong hand, stands out in history as the ablest general the United States produced, from the outbreak of the Revolution down to the beginning of the Great Rebellion".
