"Robinson initiated a revolution in gardening. In his own inimitable way he poured scorn on the formal bedding out of plants of the Victorians" (Hay, English Flower Garden). His "wild garden concept". clearly marked the beginning of a new stage in the evolution of natural garden design". in late 20th-century terms, Robinson is characterized as "˜a whole hearted ecologist" (Wolschke-Bulmahn, Nature and Ideology, 2). Devoted to creating a beautifully produced journal, Robinson sought out the "best color-printer in Europe". paper mills that still make real paper" and the finest artists and engravers (Preface). The vivid floral chromolithographs are drawn from paintings by Henry G. Moon, whose death late in 1903 contributed to the suspension of the journal, and to whom the third volume is dedicated. Nissen 2251. Faint patches of foxing to some plates (as usual), original cloth with light wear and staining. An extremely good set. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
