The Future of the American Negro
Small, Maynard, and Co, Boston, MA 1900 - Scarce SIGNED and inscribed copy of this important work by a prominent figure in post-Reconstruction American South. In this book, Washington "set forth his ideas regarding the history of enslaved and freed African-American people and their need for education to advance themselves." (Wikipedia) Originally published in 1899, this was written well after he helped to found Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Alabama (at age 25). Frontispiece is present. Overall in remarkable and well-preserved condition. Minimal signs of age and wear. Bright gilt on red linen covered boards. Binding is solid and secure. Boards exhibit minor edgewear. Spine with gilt is sun-faded, with bumped ends. Tissue protector for frontis is intact and clean, excepting illustration shadow. Interior is gently age-toned. Insider pages are free of writing and intentional marks. Front pastedown shows a squared shadow, where a former owner likely stored other papers. Text block edges exhibit expected perforations and are a little dusty. Brilliant gilt on top edge of text block; other edges are deckled. Fore and foot edges of pages exhibit some light wear including small chips and tanning. Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear. 244 pages. 5 x 7.75 inches. Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight. AbeBooks shipping quotes are ESTIMATES only. If actual shipping cost is less than the AbeBooks estimate, it is our practice to REFUND the difference to the buyer. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
