The Volunteer's Book of Facts: An Annual Record. Edited by W. H. Lanch.Third Edition.
London: W. Mithcelll; Liverpool: W. H. Blanch. 1862 - Tall 8vo, 213 x 128 mms., pp. [vi], vii - v iii, 228 (pages 203 - 228 being adverts), 2 steel-engraved plates of a muskettier and two riflemen, one double-page engraved plate of targets, one folding engraved plate of signals, another folding engraved plate of targets, 7 double-page engraved plates of target grounds or shooting areas, handsomely bound in full hard-grain red morocco, with gilt borders on both covers, title within gilt border on front cover, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, a very good to fine copy, inscribed by the editor on the half-title, "Mervyn Drake/ R. S./ presented by the Editor/ Wimbledon/ July 1st 1862." Blanch (1836 - 1899 ) was a member of the Blanch family, whose were farriers, gunmakers, and publishers from the late 18th century and continues as gunmaker to this day. The Volunteer Force was "a citizen army of part-time rifle, artillery and engineer corps created as a popular movement throughout the British Empire in 1859. Originally highly autonomous, the units of volunteers became increasingly integrated with the British Army after the Childers Reforms in 1881, before forming part of the Territorial Force in 1908. Most of the regiments of the present Territorial Army Infantry, Artillery, Engineers and Signals units are directly descended from Volunteer Force units" (Wikepedia). Although Blanch's work was intended as a periodical, publication appears to have been very irregular. Uncommon. I am sure that OCLC lists copies, but I was unable to find them. Copac locates two copies of this 1862 edition, one at the BL and another at NLS. An 1863 edition can be found in Cambridge and Oxford. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
