Philips' Handy-Volume Atlas of London
George Philip & Son, London 1891 - Containing a large scale street plan in 55 sections, on a scale of three inches to the mile of London and suburbs including the whole of the County of London. With special maps showing the Railways of London, the Geology of the London district, The Thames from Kew to Oxford, Richmond and neighbourhood, Epping Forest; and the plans of St.Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, the Zoological and Kew Gardens, Windsor Park and Oxford. Also a directory of Public Buildings, Museums and Art Galleries, Theatres and other places of amusement, Clubs, Hospitals etc. together with a complete index of 11500 streets, squares, parks, railway stations etc. The construction of this atlas is interesting in so far as the sections were never sown but glued only to the mull which also underlays the pastedowns. All the sections have now become cleanly detached which actually helps the ease of use because each double page spread can be laid flat to view. For the moment we intend to leave it this way but will reinstate should a buyer so desire. This atlas is an amazing reference source and extremely scarce. Size: 180x110mm [Attributes: Hard Cover]
