Freud als Kulturkritiker. Mit einem Briefe Professor Sigmund Freuds.
Vienna and Leipzig: Max Präger, 1930 - Small octavo. Original yellow cloth, spine and front board lettered and ruled in blue, top edge blue. With the dust jacket. Head of spine sunned, light toning to contents, new pastedown mounted to rear over library slip with the terminal advertisement leaf tipped in. A good copy in the rubbed dust jacket with old tape-repair to the verso of the slightly chipped spine panel, a neat 65 mm tear along the front joint, two ink-stains to the front panel and faint soiling to the rear. First edition. A highly significant association copy of this study of Freud by one of his most influential students, with the bookplate of Smith Ely Jelliffe, one of the first American psychoanalysts, to the front pastedown. Support for Freud among American academicians contrasted strongly with his lukewarm reception among his European contemporaries, and Jeliffe (1866-1945) was one of a select group of Americans scholars who "provided authoritative translations of Freudian ideas for a general readership, as well as applications of Freudian analysis to literature, art, and politics" (North, Reading 1922: A Return to the Scene of the Modern, p. 66). Freud, however, "was skeptically disposed towards Jeliffe, above all because of his relations with C. G. Jung" (Falzeder & Brabant, eds, The Correspondence of Sigmund Freud and Sandor Ferenczi, 1920-1933, p. 67). Jeliffe is considered the first self-identified American book collector in psychology and associated topics. In 1942 he sold his library to the Hartford Retreat, a psychiatric facility in Connecticut: their blind-stamp is found on the title page of this copy. Uncommon: two copies only (British Library and Cambridge) traced in British and Irish institutional libraries. [Attributes: First Edition]
