First volume in recent full panelled calf gilt in period style; second volume in contemporary panelled calf tooled in blind. Second volume with some rubbing and spotting, manuscript marginalia throughout. Handsome set of an important work. First edition of both volumes. The source of "Robinson Crusoe" This account of Cooke's voyage on the Dutchess was rushed into print to precede Woodes Rogers' account of the same voyage, "A Cruizing Voyage round the World". A second edition, published the same year, saw the final chapter of the book expanded into a separate second volume. The first appearance of the account of Alexander Selkirk's ordeal, credited as being the source of Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe".
