The Long Loop
Little, Brown and Company, Boston 1931 - "1931" to title page; matching copyright page states "Published April, 1931" with no later printings mentioned. Thus, the first printing. There is a PON stamped, and also the word "Discard" stamped, to the front pastedown. It appears a sheet of white paper was once affixed at the top to the FFE; this sheet has been torn away, leaving only a small fragment reading ". . . Ps Books Store . . . Circulating Library." This book does not have and shows no evidence it ever bore any other lending library attachments, stampings, or tape ghosts. NO edge stampings or cross-outs. Will close its own boards and text block, but we downgrade to "very good" due to moderate soiling of the yellow cloth-covered boards, and the fact the spine is canted about 1/4-inch. 1932 Christmas gift inscription to verso of free front endpaper, signed "The Geo. Gallup Family." We wish we could assert this is the well-known public-opinion pollster, but signature does not match. A hard-to-find Western involving cattle rustling and a villain peddling shares in a worthless oil well. B.M. Bower was the pen name of Montana-born Bertha Muzzy Sinclair-Cowan, whose often humorous novels "have been praised for their accurate portrayal of cowboy life. She wrote factually about such things as cattle branding and bronc busting, having witnessed these events firsthand. Bower's West is a place of change in which characters embrace new technologies from barbed wire to Kodak cameras," drawing inevitable comparisons to the contemporary work of Hopalong Cassidy's Clarence Mulford. 274 pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
