Somewhat rubbed, particularly at the extremities, head and tail of the spine chipped, pastedowns browned, some marginal foxing in proximity to the folding maps, light toning else, a very good copy. 8 coloured maps bound in, two of them folding, large folding coloured general area map in an end-pocket. First edition, one of 500 copies, extremely uncommon, just 7 copies on OCLC - BL, Australian Defence Force Academy, Australian War Memorial, National Library of Australia, Bibliothèque de documentation internationale contemporaine, Nanterre, Tyndale University and College Seminary, CA, US Army Heritage and Education Center - Copac adds IWM, and another copy has been traced on-line at Bibliothèque St. Étienne de Jérusalem - École Biblique et Archéologique Française, Jerusalem. The preponderance of copies in Australian institutions reflecting the importance of Anzac forces, including the legendary Australian Light Horse, in this stage of the campaign, A typically thorough geographical intelligence handbook. Classified "Secret" - "On no account to be removed from the H.Q. of the Unit to which it has been issued" - this handbook contains general geographical information and historical background, with more detailed descriptions of the principal towns - maps of Nablus, Nazareth, Haifa, El-Kerak, Damascus, Sidon, Beirut, and Tripoli - the largest part of the text being dedicated to numerous routes, including several by rail, a glossary of topographical and geographical terms in Arabic is appended, together with a guide to local money, weights and measures. Ownership of T.E. Bayne-Jardine to the upper board, Thomas Edward Bayne-Jardine was a temporary second lieutenant in the Service Corps, "Local Major, Special List, attached Camel Transport Corps", who was awarded the DSO for his services in the region in the New Year's Honours List of 1919.
