Beverly Hills, California: Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, 1981. #133 of 150 copies signed by Fay Ray, Lucille Ball, Gloria Stuart, Alice Faye, and Luise Rainer, who appeared in the original 1937 edition of The Academy Players Directory Bulletin. Additionally signed at later dates by Marc Lawrence, Buddy Rogers, Ginger Rogers, and Beverly Roberts. The presentation label in this copy bears the name of Carl Karnig Mahakian (1926-2015), whose film and television credits include The Manchurian Candidate, The Brady Bunch, and Miami Vice. In 1936, a co-operative service for actors, agents, and casting directors was conceived by Donald Gledhill, then Executive Secretary of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Nurtured in following years by Darryl Zanuck, the Academy Players Directory was regarded as the "bible of the industry" well into the modern era. This unique publication reproduces the first Players Directory and was only available through the Academy. Laid in are copies of the original solicitation letter from the publisher, the prospectus, and the order form. Quarto. Original slate blue buckram binding, with silver titles. A fine copy, housed in the publisher's slipcase.
