(John Watts) de Peyster, of Tivoli NY, to Judge Wood of Cold Spring NY, dated 21/10/1884, loosely inserted. De Peyster (1821 - 1907) was a New York author and philanthropist, one of the first military critics, noted for his histories of the American Revolution and Civil War, whose family played a large role in Tivoli, (Dutchess County) NY. De Peyster wrote a series of articles on war tactics during the Civil War in recognition of which the state later raised his rank to brevet major general. De Peyster invites the judge to stay in Tivoli; written on embossed monogrammed paper, split at original horizontal fold, 6 x 8 1/4".Thick 4to, frontispiece, [9]-791pp, 96 plates including portraits, fold out map; Index [xxxii]. All edges gilt, lacks spine. Three quarter brown leather and dark green boards. First signature loose, however contents complete and in very good condition with pages bright and clean, including the fold out map at the rear, which is slightly ruffled at one edge.
