Carlo Zenero 1653 - with woodcut printer's device on title, engraved initials, numerous woodcut illustrations in text, somewhat browned, tending to the severe in places, stain in the fore-margin diminishing from the front, pp. [xii], 328, small 4to, contemporary liimp vellum, some staining, sound. First edition of this rare compilation of works on mathematical and optical problems, all but one of which are published here for the first time. The topics treated include the optical interpretation of the phases of the moon (pp. 1-124), the determination of the horizon, the practical physics of lenses and mirrors, and the construction of surveying and leveling instruments. The last book, De altitudine caucasi (first published at Paris in 1649), presents a commentary on Chapter 13 (30 pages) of Aristotle's Meterologica edited by the eminent French scholar and librarian Gabriel Naudé (1600-1653). The volume also contains over 150 woodcut illustrations, including several depicting leveling instruments of the author's own design - one of which, a wooden chorobates or water level, is discussed at some length by Kiely.
