Guido Cavalcanti Rime
Edizione Rappezzata fra le Rovine / Edizione Marsano Anno IX [i.e.X] 1932, Genova - Sole edition - one of about 500 copies "salvaged from the ruins" of what Pound had originally intended to be a sumptuous production by Faber & Gwyer of the verses of the 13th century troubador (and soul-mate of Dante Alighieri). (Gallup B27]. Inscribed by Pound on the front free endpaper: "With benediction on the # [?] Ezra Pound anno XVI # the date of inscription J. Angleton". Raised in Italy, James Jesus "Jim" Angleton was an aspiring young poet when he visited Pound in Rapallo in 1938. The two subsequently corresponded and Angleton published some of EP's writings on economic theory in his short-lived magazine "Furioso", produced whilst he was a student at Yale. With dizzying irony, Angleton went on to work for the CIA, running the shadowy X-2 counter-intelligence section's Italian desk during the war, searching local sources for information about enemy spies. He would certainly have been aware of Pound's Italian broadcasts and, despite the fact that those were based on the same views that Angleton had been happy to publish at Yale four years previously, they appear to have been the direct cause of Pound's arraignment for treason after the war and his eventual twelve years' confinement on grounds of insanity at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. Angleton eventually rose - if that's the right word - to become director of counter-intelligence staff at the CIA from 1954-1974. Not in the British Library - the only copy located in the UK apparently being at the Bodleian Library. A nice copy, re-bound in half-buckram and patterned paper boards, with the original wrappers bound-in. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
