Paradise Lost, A Poem in Twelve Books
The Arion Press, San Francisco 2002 - Limited edition of 400 copies (plus 26 NFS), this no. 115. Paradise Lost was composed after 1652, when Milton had gone blind, dictated from memory to a secretary. Of that transcription, only a manuscript for Book I survives; hence, various versions of the text have arisen over the centuries. The Arion Press engaged Professor John T. Shawcross, an eminent Miltonist at the University of Kentucky, to develop a new modernized text for their publication. ***DESCRIPTION: Fully bound in black linen cloth with a round back, purple leather spine label with lettering stamped in genuine gold, fore-edges uncut; type Goudy Text and Baskerville, small quarto in size (just under 10" tall), pagination: (i)-xxxiv, (1)-396, colophon (397); limited edition of 400 copies (plus 26 NFS), this no. 115. The publisher's slipcase is covered in matching black linen cloth, on the front a vignette in purple of a stylized tree with fruit hanging from its boughs, on the back a vignette in purple of the tree without its fruit, a snake entwined around its trunk, spine label which matches the book of purple leather stamped in real gold. ***CONDITION: Fine, with the cloth binding clean and without blemish, a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings. The slipcase is also fine, strong and sturdy, perhaps a hint of dustiness. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the Abe standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
