Captioned tissue-guarded frontispiece in each volume. A gripping and detailed account of the "Chelyuskin"'s voyage in the Arctic, during which the Soviet ice-breaker became stranded in the ice. Eventually, the crew escaped, and their journey led to the establishment of new trade routes. This work is the first important monograph on the descriptions of the dramatic events leading to the sinking of the ship in the Chukchi Sea (a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean) on Feb. 13, 1934, the life of its helpless sailors in a temporary camp, and their rescue by air two months later (Belov 1959, p. 158; Vize 1948). The first two volumes ( " ") deal with the expedition of the "Chelyuskin," the shipwreck, and the crew's survival on the drifting ice. The third volume ( ) contains the testimonies of the very men who led the successful rescue mission. Published the same year as the original edition (1934), this work is the first revised edition. Lavishly illustrated throughout with numerous fold-out color maps, in-text and full-page photogravures (including some tipped in), as well as b/w and color illustrations, this work provides also informative data on temperature, soundings, the measurements of ice waves, analysis of plankton, and observations of animal life along the route.This monograph was issued in three different bindings: 1) Plastic over cloth; 2) Cloth with mounted plastic (our set); 3) Full cloth.
