The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade)....
London: Chatto and Windus, 1884. FIRST UK EDITION. Octavo, pp.xvi; 438; [34]. With 174 wood-cut illustrations by Kemble, including a full page frontispiece of Huckleberry Finn, protected by a tissue guard. Recently re-backed using original publisher's pictorial red cloth boards, with original cloth pasted to spine. Gilt titles to spine and upper board. Original brown floral endpapers and publisher's adverts dated October 1884.Adverts quite roughly cut; otherwise a clean near-fine copy internally, solidly re-backed. Original spine cloth darkened and worn, with losses to head and tail (neatly made-up by new back). Very good overall. Following the classic 'boy's own' adventures of the promising young gent Tom Sawyer, Twain here attempts a more mature, somewhat darker picture of a less privileged American childhood on the mighty Mississippi. Regarded by many as a corner-stone of American literature, it confronts issues such as slavery in a sympathetic yet humerously sardonic tone which belonged to Twain alone. Listed in The Observer's All-Time 100 Best Novels [2003]. BMC No.261, pp.90-93....
