Timbouctou: Voyage au Maroc, au Sahara et au Soudan. 2 vols
Timbouctou: Voyage au Maroc, au Sahara et au Soudan. Paris: Hachette, 1887. 1st French ed. Hardcover. Good. 2 vols. facsimile (of a Moroccan document), 53 woodcut illustrations (of which 5 are folding panoramas, 17 are full-page, and 31 are less than full-page), folding map, xii, 467, 438p. Contemporary quarterbinding (marbled boards backed in dark brown leather). 24cm. Backstrip faded. Marbled boards are rubbed along edges and scuffed. Contents age-toned and have a couple of pages with short edges tears but are otherwise sound although not printed on great paper. From the John R. Willis Collection of Africana with his bookplate in each volume. This French edition was translated by Pierre Lehautcourt. We are at a loss to explain "contenant 27 Gravures et une carte" which appears on the title-pages since the Table des Gravures in each volume lists 53 illustrations, all of which are present, but no map.
