COLONEL QUARITCH, V.C. (Near Fine Copy in Three Volumes)
Longmans, Green, London 1888 - Haggard, H. Rider. COLONEL QUARITCH, V. C. A Tale of Country Life. In Three Volumes. London: Longmans. Green, 1888. First Edition. A NEAR FINE copy, in original publisher's bright scarlet cloth blocked in black. Despite some fading of the spine (a side effect hard to avoid with scarlet red Victorian cloth) and a few spots of discoloration to the cloth, this is essentially a fine, virtually unread set which sat on someone's shelf for 125 years or so; the owner (bookplate on front paste-down) apparently didn't get past Vol. 1 as the latter two volumes have very tight text blocks. The binding is unworn, the inner hinges are equally tight. Scattered foxing throughout but a very nice copy indeed. The only H. Rider Haggard three-volume novel which can be acquired at a modest cost. Murder plots, raging storms, blackmail & a treasure hunt: even though Haggard subtitled this novel "A Tale Of Country Life" he managed to turn rural England into a stewpot as sinister as his famous King Solomon's Mines. Sadleir 1084. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
