A View of the Magnificent Pallace of Loggia at Caiano near Florence.
R. Sayer. London. 10-01- 1750. - Copperplate engraving, handcolored, plate mark 11 3/4 x 17 1/4 inches on sheet 14 1/2 x 21 1/2 inches. Faint toning to paper edge (not affecting image), very good condition. Giuseppe Zocchi (Joseph Zocchi) (1711 or 1717 to 1767) was an Italian painter and printmaker, known for his impressive views of Florence, Italy. A collection of engravings of the views was published in 1744 under the title Scelta di XXIV vedute delle principali contrade, piazze, chiese, e palazzi della citta di Firenze, with subsequent later editions. This 1750 British copperplate engraving after a Zocchi view has rather crude but likely contemporaneous hand coloring, the skies being embellished with a gouache blue. The publication line beneath the title reads: London Printed for R. Sayers Map & Printseller opposite Fetter Lane Fleet Street. – And J. Boydell Engraver at the Unicorn the Corner of Queen Street Cheapside.
