Bound in black cloth, title blind-stamped on cover and gilt-stamped on spine; spine gilt rubbed. 7.75" x 5" Presentation copy, inscribed in green ink on the front free-endpaper: "To Charles Jackson / grateful for his visit / and for the fine gift of his book. / Pac. Palisades / 2. VII 44 / Thomas Mann." [Mann (1875-1955) moved to Pacific Palisades, California, with his family in 1940. Newark-born Charles Jackson went to Hollywood where he was befriended by Thomas Mann. The book referenced in this inscription is Jackson's novel, THE LOST WEEKEND, published in 1944 and describing five days in the life of an alcoholic, thought to be autobiographical.
