The Pastorals of Virgil, With a Course of English Reading, Adapted for Schools: In Which all the Proper Facilities are Given Enabling Youtm [sic] [Youth] to Acquire The Latin Language, in the Shortest Period of Time. Illustrated by 230 Engravings.
F C & J Rivingtons; Longman and Co., London 1821 - xii, [lacking ii-iii], pp 12, v-xxiv (preface) pp 1-12 [13-22 wanting] pp 23-48 [pp 49-70 wanting] pp 71-76 [pp 77-80 wanting] pp 81-214 A mutilated copy of the first volume of Thornton's Virgil bound in original sheepskin with six compartments to the spine, horizontal gilt bands, 'Thornton's Pastorals of Virgil' on a black label in the second compartment and 'POCKET EDITION' at the foot of the spine. The boards are otherwise unadorned but rubbed and scratched. Every one of Blake's famous wood engravings for this edition has been crudely removed from the book leaving Thornton's Mundi Antiqui Tabula and Antiquae Italiae Tabula the only two remaining plates in the book; 5mm hole below 'Third Edition' statement on title page. Ownership signature of 'Owen Hughes. November 20th 1832' on the title page and elsewhere in the book - given the early date he seems unlikely to be a suspect for the removal of the plates. Bentley A Blake Bibliography, 411. Please contact Christian White at Modernfirsteditions if you would like more information about this book. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
