Autograph Letter, signed ("A H Layard"), to Sir Henry Creswicke Rawlinson, from Baghdad, on archaeological topics
Nov 8, [18]50, Baghdad - Ink on laid paper, thistle embossed in blind at upper left. 2 leaves, folded to form 8 pages. 1 vols. 12mo. LAYARD TO RAWLINSON. Sir A.H. Layard (1817-1894), the discoverer of Nineveh, on the matter of dating coffins, misprints "corrected in the last edition", and some remarks on Baghdad. Layard began his excavations at Birs Nimrud in 1845, and began publishing his findings with Nineveh and its Remains (1849). He returned to the Near East in 1849 and "conducted major excavations at Kuyunjik, funded by the British Museum and described in a second book, Nineveh and Babylon (1853). These yielded further important trophies and discoveries, including the cuneiform library of Sennacherib's grandson Ashurbanipal, on which most modern knowledge of Assyrian culture is founded" (ODNB).Henry Creswicke Rawlinson was British consul in Baghdad from 1844, and became consul-general in 1851. His assistance to Layard was extremely important, though in later years they had their disagreements. Rawlinson's "undoubted energy, wealth, scholarship in languages, and high social standing promoted public interest in Assyriology, and gives reason for Budge, in The Rise and Progress of Assyriology (1925), to call him 'the father of Assyriology'" (ODNB).Reading in part: "My dear Rawlinson, Here I am at last in Bagdad ? descending the river without molestation from the Arabs notwithstanding the very disturbed state of the country. I cannot yet commence operations on account of the very disturbed state of the Arabs and the want of the order from Constantinople which was promised me months ago ? I find Baghdad much changed in every respect."A choice association. Stitched. Hinged on last page. One page split (closed tear) without loss Ink on laid paper, thistle embossed in blind at upper left. 2 leaves, folded to form 8 pages. 1 vols. 12mo [Attributes: Hard Cover]
