Archive of 3 typed letters signed to his publisher's representative at Coronet, Peter Straus, circa 1987-1988
N.p., N.p. 1988 - An archive of 3 typed letters signed by British crime fiction author Ian Rankin to his first paperback publisher, Peter Straus at Coronet Books, regarding three early books: "Knots and Crosses," "Watchman," and "Westwind." Three letters that reveal a progression of enthusiasm and planning from the young author that is difficult not to love. The first letter, dated May 20, 1987, is in response to Coronet's acceptance of Rankin's first John Rebus novel, "Knots and Crosses," for paperback publication. Rankin's enthusiasm is palpable, and he excitedly notes that he has just finished reading the Coronet edition of John le Carre's "A Perfect Spy," and that his next novel to be published in hardcover, "Watchman," may contain blurbs by Coronet authors Chapman Pincher and Nigel West. The second letter, dated June 8, 1987 (a month after the first), contains a typed summary of effusive reviews on Rankin's work, assembled by the author to send to Coronet. He mentions that "Watchman" has found a hardcover publisher, and describes the plot of "Westwind" (though he had not yet come up with that title), and ends with his typical humor, "I do hope the thought of reading more Ian Rankin novels doesn't fill you with horror." The third letter, dated March 11, 1988 (about 9 months later), congratulates Mr. Straus on having landed a new position with Hamish Hamilton. He goes on to mention that "Knots and Crosses" is slated to launch the new Coronet Crime series imprint under the auspices of Hodder and Stoughton, and that Leslie Grantham (of the series "EastEnders") has bought the screen option for same.A terrific grouping of three letters from a young author who shows an enthusiasm and aggression that no doubt played a part in his eventual position as one of the best selling authors in England, and the world.8.5 x 11 inches, Near Fine.
