The History of Shanghai - Part 1
Shanghai, Kelly & Walsh Limited, 1921. Printed and published for the Municipal Council. 1 thick volume in-4, 504 pp.-v, illustrated with a large folding panorama of The Bund as frontispiece, 5 folding maps and 6 plates, rebound in modern brown leather, a very good and clean copy. A very scarce book on Shanghai History. This is Part 1 only, the second part is even more rare. "Nearly a century has run its course since the birth of the modern Shanghai, and in recent years the need has often been expressed for a history which would deal in a comprehensive manner with the various aspects, historical, political and commercial, of the Foreign Settlements there situate, a work which, whilst in no sense a reflexion on those excellent publications on the subject now extant, would, by its very magnitude, demand that private enterprise should be complemented by public aid. In 1906, the Municipal Council accordingly commissioned the late Mr. G. Lanning to undertake the compilation of the present work on its behalf. For over thirteen years he devoted himself to this task, so that the greater portion of the volume was ready for publication at the time of his much lamented death in January last. Fortunately the Council has been able to secure the services of Mr. S. Couling, to continue and bring to fruition the work to which the late Mr. Lanning had devoted some many years of his life." Extract of the Foreword by N.O. Liddell, Secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Council.
