The Watchman and Other Poems
McClelland, Goodchild & Stewart, Toronto 1916 - xii, 159 pp. 8vo. Green cloth. Rare cat signature. Bookplate from the library of George Ross Roy. Untrimmed. Library markings from the University of Montreal. Spine label and rear paste-down envelope removed. Very small spine gap between signatures 3 & 4 (p. 49) and 6 & 7 (p. 97). Among the rarest of Montgomery titles, the author's cat signature is certainly her hardest to find. It is beautifully situated here. While the influence of Robert Burns and her Scottish heritage on her writing is well documented, this copy of Montgomery's poetry title connects her to Ross, a scholar of Scottish literature and lore. As Ross attended the University of Montreal, the library from which this copy hails, it is possible he bought it during his education there in the 1950's, which would correspond with the style of bookplate used. Before specializing in Scottish literature, Roy focused for some time on Canadian literature, and so his interest in this volume plays a role his scholarly development. Montgomery visited Montreal in 1917 and could have signed this copy during that trip. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
