Harmondsworth: Penguin Books / Kestrel Books, 1976 - Large octavo. Original cream boards with brown cloth spine, titles to spine in gilt and black, yellow endpapers. With the dust jacket and publisher's slipcase. An excellent, bright copy, with a little faint foxing to edges of text block and price-clipped jacket. Illustrated by John Lawrence. First illustrated edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author and illustrator on the verso of the half-title: "yours sincerely, Richard Adams & John Lawrence". Initially turned down by all major publishing houses, Watership Down was finally issued by Rex Collings in 1972; sales were over 100,000 in the first year and Adams was awarded both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Award for children's fiction.
