C. Julius Caesar's Commentaries of his Wars in Gaul, and Civil War with Pompey.
London: J. J. and P. Knapton, D. Midwinter, R. Gosling, et al., 1737. To which is added a Supplement to his Commentary of his Wars in Gaul ? Adorn'd with Sculptures from the Designs of the Famous Palladio. Made English from the Original Latin, by Co. Martin Bladen. Octavo (200 × 122 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, red morocco label framed with double gilt rules, bands bracketed and boards panelled with similar rules, edges sprinkled red. Frontispiece, and 9 other plates, all but one folding, 3 folding maps, title page printed in red and black. Just a little rubbed, some light browning, but otherwise a very good copy indeed. Sixth edition, the first was published in 1705. Bladen's early education was in Yorkshire, he subsequently attended Westminster School before matriculating at St John's College, Cambridge. He was admitted to the Inner Temple in 1698, but never practised law, instead joining the army. He became ensign to Captain Fletcher in his uncle Brigadier-General Thomas Fairfax's Regiment of Foot in December 1697. After an initial posting to Ireland, his regiment was sent to Spain, Gibraltar and Portugal in the service of the duke of Marlborough - the dedicatee of the present work - and in 1704, when the earl of Galway, Henri de Massue de Ruvigny arrived as the new generalissimo of the British Army, he took Bladen as his aide-de-camp. He was appointed colonel in 1709, but within the year he had sold out and retired from the military. His reputation rests on his closet to three decades of service on the Board of Trade. An extremely attractive copy in unrestored contemporary condition from the library of retail chemist and bibliophile Robert J. Hayhurst, with his bookplate to the front pastedown.
