From the Introduction - "One of the most remarkable of the British Museum's collections is a superb album of seventeenth-century watercolour of tropical plants, insects and other animals from Surinam, one of the smallest and least visited countries in South America. it is remarkable that a collection of watercolours of the flora and fauna of Surinam should have been made by a European during the late seventeenth century. It is all the more surprising that this work should have been carried out by a woman, the artist and natural history pioneer, Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717). Her story is one of the most fascinating in the annals of natural history." This book has a b&w frontispiece and endpaper maps. The album of plates is in near fine condition with no inscriptions and even had 3 extra (duplicate) plates loosely inserted to the rear. The Commentary book is also near fine. The case is in excellent condition with just minor bumping. Heavy item so extra will be needed for shipping to non-UK customers.
