London: Bernard Quaritch. Very Good. 1868. Hardcover. 4to 11" - 13" tall; 13 1/4" x 9". Original publisher's cloth with elaborately decorated front board, gilt, expertly rebacked to style; a. E. G. 157 pages + 112 color plates. A magnificent work on the history of ornamental design covering the following periods: primitive, Egyptian, Assyrian and Persian, Greek, Pompeian, Roman, Byzantine, Arabian, Turkish, Moresque, Persian, Indian, Hindu, Chinese, Celtic, Medieval, Renaissance, Elizabethan, and Italian. Also a chapter on leaves and flowers from nature. Condition: Very good, complete as issued with all 112 tissue-guarded plates. Boards with moderate to heavy wear and a few areas of loss. Endpapers renewed. Pages lightly toned, a few with small edge chips not affecting any text. Plates generally very good or better with vibrant color, gentle toning and occasional thumb soiling with the following exceptions: Frontis with edge chips. Two plates with small closed tears, two with light pencil notations. Final ten plates with tiny chip in lower right margin, final two plates foxed, plate XCIX with 2" tear, affecting image.
