Eugene Onegin. A Novel in Verse Translated from the Russian, with a Commentary, by Vladimir Nabakov.
New York: Bollingen Series, Pantheon Books, 1964 - 4 volumes, octavo. Original light blue cloth, titles to spines gilt on red ground, top edges dyed blue. With the dust jackets. Housed in publisher's card slipcase. Mild fading to spines, blue topstains faded, an excellent copy with the dust jackets only very lightly spine-tanned and with a few minor marks and scuffs. The publishers slipcase is firmly intact, though with fading to the top edge and around the mouth. First edition, first printing, review copy with the publisher's review slip laid in, of Nabokov's translation of the great Russian text which he considered to be one of the greatest novels of all time. 'Arising out of the needs of his Russian literature students and serving also as a means of establishing his academic credentials', Nabokov spent most of the 1950s translating and annotating his English version (Boyd, in Nabokov's Butterflies, p.13). The source text used was the 1837 edition, which was the last one to be published in Pushkin's lifetime. A magnificent piece of scholarship and a terrific homage to Pushkin. Published as number 72 in the Bollingen Series. Scarce in such condition, and as a review copy especially appealling. [Attributes: First Edition]
