A geological account of the United States; comprehending a short description of their animal, vegetable, and mineral productions, antiquities and curiosities.
Birch and Small 1807 - Philadelphia, 12mo, [viii], 496, xiv p. and 5 plates of scenery, etc. A near Fine copy in recent half calf and marbled boards, with four raised bands on the backstrip and a red leather gilt title label. Covers and backstrip pristine. The pages and plates are lightly age-toned, but the text is very readable. Joints and hinges solid, binding firm. The plates are quite clean in this copy. This scarce pocket-sized volume is of historical significance in that it appeared two years earlier than the classic geological work of Maclure, acknowledged as the "father" of American geology. The volume includes chapters on topography, climate, soils, wildlife, minerals and fossils, springs, caverns, waterfalls and other “natural curiosities”, etc. A handsome, well preserved copy. Ward and Carozzi 1532. Hazen 6960. Merrill 31. Not in BMNH. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
