Printed by Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly, London 1791 - 2 vols. 3 plates (portrait, round robin and facsimile of Johnson's handwriting), vii, [17], 516, [2], 588p. Old leather, rebacked with most of original backstrip mounted. 29cm. Armorial bookplates of Thomas Philip, Earl de Grey on front pastedown in both volumes. Modern (20th century) armorial bookplate of a later owner on front free endpaper in both volumes. Mostly light foxing although it is much heavier on portrait as well as other leaves at beginning and end of both volumes. Has "give" on page 135. Laid in is a 1930 letter to the later owner from Ben Abrahamson's Argus Book Shop in Chicago discussing the "give" issue point and explaining why copies with "give" might or might not constitute the first issue.
