First leaf used as pastedown, contemporary ink ownership notation on titlepage, approximately one-third of engraved plate lacking, minor loss along one fold of larger map. Good. A rare city guide to the Gateway to the West. From the Introduction: "The necessity of such a 'Guide Book' as is here presented is obvious to all, and.this is the first complete Guide to the City of St. Louis and its surroundings ever issued." The engraved plate is a view of St. Louis harbor with the city in the background, seeming to glow to the heavens. The first folding map shows the routes of the Pennsylvania Central Railroad. The larger map is a street directory of the city itself, with the Mississippi River prominently placed to the south, wrapping around the city. Rare, with only eleven copies in OCLC. HOWES P88.
