Verso of title page lists six of the author's works, and notes that 'On the Variation of Animals and Plants under domestication' is 'Preparing for Publication'. Freeman 800. Original brown cloth, decorated in blind (with vertical lines on both boards and the spine), gilt orchid illustration on the upper board, title and decorations at head and tail in gilt on spine; the spine faded with some fraying of the cloth at the head and, but no so much, the tail, extremities a little rubbed. Ex-Horton College Library, but the only markings are a small round ink stamp twice on the front free endpaper and in the margins (encroaching a little on the text) of four pages. Internally very clean. Now in a new mylar wrapper. The front pastedown has two pencilled inscriptions: 'Bought from Taylor Florist Aug 27 - 96' and 'Mr Walker 12-5-41'. At the head of page 1 there is a pencilled note 'Refer page 172' (evidently because of a reference there to Hooker's 'Flora of Tasmania') and there are 4 early pages with lightly pencilled marginal lines. ***Regarded as the first of the Darwin's volumes of evidence supporting his theory of natural selection. Horton College, near Ross in Tasmania's Midlands, operated under the aegis of Wesleyan Church 1852-93. *** Please use [Ask Bookseller a Question] option below to confirm availability and get accurate postage quote for this item (the amount quoted is for an 'average' hard-cover book of up to 1kg in weight).
