The Sea Around Us [Association Copy of the Scarce First State]
New York: Oxford University Press, 1951. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. A Very Good copy of the quite scarce first edition, first printing, first state of this notable work -- with the delicate, flat, not plasticized, boards, a two-line copyright with no mention of H. Wolff, and no statement of any later printings -- (general edge rubbing, thin crack to the front joint paper, foxing and age dusting to the closed page block's upper edge), in a Very Good example of the quite scarce first state dust jacket with three bars and no price (as is proper) to the front flap and showing no reviews on that flap, and with the rear panel text ending in "coral reefs" (modest sunning to the spine, small chips to the spine ends and board corners, rubbing to the folds at the spine and flap edges); Rachel Carson's highly-regarded work on the life history of the Oceans, and being her second book (following "Under the Sea Wind"). The chapter titled "The Birth of an Island", which appeared in the Yale Review prior to the book's publication, won the George Westinghouse Science Writing Award for the best scientific writing of 1950. The book itself won both the 1952 National Book Award in Nonfiction and the 1952 John Burroughs Medal in nature writing. While not indicated within the book, this copy has an EXCELLENT PROVENANCE, having belonged to Carson's highly-regarded Literary Agent Joan Daves. A mere 100 or so first state copies were issued. A Very Good copy with an EXCELLENT PROVENANCE and QUITE SCARCE IN THE DELICATE FIRST STATE BOARDS and FIRST STATE DUST JACKET.
