THE EXAMINATION OF JOSEPH GALLOWAY, ESQ; LATE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY OF PENNSYLVANIA. BEFORE THE HOUSE OF COMMONS, IN A COMMITTEE ON THE AMERICAN PAPERS. WITH EXPLANATORY NOTES
London, 1779. [2],85pp. Modern three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Extremities lightly rubbed, spine lightly faded. Modern bookplate on front pastedown. Negligible foxing. Very good plus. First edition. Galloway, one of the most outspoken prominent Loyalists, had been very critical of Gen. Howe and the British ministry regarding their conduct of the war following the evacuation of Philadelphia. In the present hearing, Lord Germain in part retaliated, grilling Galloway for several hours and attempting to discredit him - which he succeeded in doing to some extent. Galloway himself saw his testimony as a triumph and purchased hundreds of copies. ESTC T13512. AMERICAN CONTROVERSY 79-49a. HOWES G37.
