Charles Scribner's Sons 1926 - New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. First Edition, First Printing with Scribner's seal on copyright. Signed by the author "'Smoky' - A good horse for you. Will James '33" on front pastedown. Octavo (8.25" x 6.25"); 310pp.Original green boards; missing dustjacket. Boards show some rubbing/bumping along edges and corners with some soiling/smudging to face and tugging to head and tail of spine. Boards open easily and feel a bit loose, with a split showing down rear hinge, but boards and binding are holding soundly. Small ex libris stamp of John Stuart Groves (a bibliophile whose collection and bookplates yield a handful of search results on their own merit) on front pastedown, with offsetting opposite. Endpapers toned with a few darker spots at corners, and a small chip to top corner of front free endpaper. Binding is holding soundly and pages are unmarked. Comes with clean, crisp facsimile dustjacket, which is not factored into price. Based loosely on his own first horse from his early days learning wrangling and other cowboy arts in Saskatchewan. Smoky is the author's first novel, was the sixth winner of the Newbery Medal in 1927, and was the basis for the 1946 film starring Fred MacMurray, Anne Baxter, and Bruce Cabot. [AB-45] [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
