FIRST EDITION, 2 volumes, complete set, 1887-1888, 4to, approximately 360 x 280 mm, 14¼ x 11 inches, Volume I: brick red and black illustrated title page, 9 almost full page illustrations and many large illustrations around the text plus numerous small vignettes and decorations, all in black or red or a combination of the two, (104) pages printed on hand-made paper; Volume II: Pianoforte Arrangement of the Music composed by Otto Goldschmidt, Malcolm Lawson, Walter Parratt and Professor W. H. Monk, same large 4to format, pages: (4), 66. Both bound in stiff white vellum, top edges gilt, brown and white patterned endpapers, Volume I with red and gilt stamping on upper cover, with a beautiful illustration, lower cover in red only also with an illustration, Volume II stamped on both covers only in red. Volume I: a couple of small pale marks to covers, minute nick at tail of spine, ink number on half-title, errata slip tipped-in on dedication page, some pale offsetting from illustrations; Volume II: ink number on title page. A near Fine clean tight set, both in the original plain cream dustwrappers which are slightly worn, darkened on the spine and somewhat browned, plus the original brown, cream and red illustrated slipcase, dusty and slightly stained, split on one short side and splitting on the other. Spencer, page 97-99: "In the spring of 1886 Crane was asked to design a book to commemorate a theatrical event based on new translations of Homer and Aschylus by Professor Warr of Kings College, London. ... Many designs were based on stage settings devised by well-known artists...This project allowed Crane to indulge his love of the antique.
