Les R?verb?res. Nos. 1 (April 1938) through 5 (July 1939) (all published), with added variant of no. 2, several extra plates, and other related ephemeral material laid in
A complete run, plus additional material, of the rare neo-Dada revue (each issue 8 pp. plus insert, printed on various types and colors of paper stock) edited by Jean Marembert and Michel Tapie, representing the views of the R?verb?res group, founded in December 1937 by Tapie, Marembert, Jacques Office, Pierre Mine, and Henri Bernard, and active in promoting Dadaist exhibitions, jazz concerts, stage performances, and literary works, the present journal conceived of primarily as a literary review but which also presented visual material, including in each issue a full page hors-texte plate (signed in the plate) and other illustrations by artists including Tapie, Cocteau, Roger Sby, Pierre Minne, Aline Gagnaire, and Ulrich Senne; literary and critical contributions are by Apollinaire, Ribemont-Dessaignes, Noel Arnaud, Camille Bryen, Georges Herment, and Jacques Bureau, among others. Some pp. a bit frayed at edges, some paper a bit brittle as to be expected, generally in good condition. 4to. Orig. printed and stapled wrpps., some issues a bit rubbed, spine of one issue repaired with tape, each issue laid into paper wrpps., all housed in recent boards slipcase. Paris 1938-1939. An important and rare pre-War neo-Dadaist journal promoting an anti-Surrealist point of view throughout, starting with Bureau's open letter to Andr? Breton on the front page of the first issue. Other issues are subtitled "D?mobilisation de la Po?sie", "Entartete Kunst" (concerning the notorious German exhibition of "Degenerate Art"), "Art Po?tique", and "6 Manifestes". The group provided much energy to the Parisian avant-garde circle just prior to the Second World War and promoted a wide variety of performances, including jazz by Django Reinhardt and stage performances by the like of Ribemont-Dessaignes and Apollinaire, as well as exhibitions of visual art. The present set includes a variant copy of issue #2 on different paper stock, as well as second copies of 4 of the 5 hors-texte plates. Also laid in are approx. 9 printed ephemeral items related to the group, including promotional material and programs of exhibitions and performances, many typographically interesting. A unique compendium.
