The first complete English translation of the eight books of Spanish historian Peter Martyr's DE NOUO ORBE., one of the most important of all sources for the history of the discovery and conquest of the New World, from Columbus through the conquest of Mexico by Cortes. Martyr, an official in the Spanish royal court, was present when Columbus returned in 1493, and was actively involved on the highest level of administration in New World affairs for the rest of his life. Herein are the best contemporary accounts of all of the earliest explorations of the Caribbean, northern South America, and Mexico. This is thus the first English text in complete form of one of the most important pieces of all early Americana. Martyr published his history beginning in 1511, and separately and cumulatively until his death. The first complete edition of all eight books was issued in Latin in 1532. Martyr's work was first translated into English in 1555 by Richard Eden as THE DECADES OF THE NEWE WORLDE. That was the first major work in English about the New World, but it only included the first three of Martyr's books. The full translation of all eight books, by Michael Lok, was not issued until 1612, when the present volume was issued by the printer, Thomas Adams. An English Americanum of the greatest importance.
