Collection of novels in English translation.
London: Vizetelly & Co; Chatto & Windus; William Heinemann; Hutchinson & Co, 1885–1903 - 29 volumes, octavo and crown octavo. Original pictorial cloth bindings. Illustrated edition of Eugène Rougon lacking one plate; small loss to front free endpaper of first edition in English of Abbé Mouret; front free endpaper of The Dram-Shop lacking. A few volumes with contemporary bookplates or ownership inscriptions, occasional spotting to contents. An excellent set. 15 illustrated editions. A pretty collection of novels in pictorial cloth, ten being first English editions. The first editions in English include The Soil (La Terre), which earned its publisher, Henry Vizetelly, three months behind bars and a damaged reputation. The Soil was branded as a work of "bestial obscenity" by the solicitor-general Sir Edward Clarke. However "just before his death [in January 1894 Vizetelly] had the satisfaction of reading that Sir Edward Clarke's successor as solicitor-general, Sir Charles Russell, had led the applause for Zola when he read a paper at a meeting of the Institute of Journalists in September 1893" (ODNB). The other nine first editions in English are: Abbé Mouret's Transgression; Doctor Pascal; The Dream; Money; Stories for Ninon; the Three Cities trilogy (Lourdes; Rome; Paris); Truth. The 29 volumes include three editions of Abbé Mouret's Transgression and of the Assommoir, two editions of His Excellency Eugène Rougon and of His Masterpiece?
