Notice Sur Le Nouveau Systeme De Ponts En Fonte Suivi Dans La Construction Du Pont Du Carrousel.
4to. Text volume. Oblong 4to. volume [700 x 332 mm.] of plates, both bound in contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards; pp. xviii, 129, [1]; title-page, 15 numbered, engraved plates of which 4 are folding; scattered spotting to the first few leaves of the text volume, occasional light spotting to some of the plates. Proposals for a cast-iron bridge between the Pont Royal and the Pont des Arts in Paris were submitted by Polonceau in 1830. Work on what became known as the Pont du Carrousel commenced in 1834, eventually opening to traffic in 1839. Polonceau opens his account of the construction of the Pont du Carrousel with a history of cast-iron bridges, beginning with the bridge at Coalbrookdale in Shropshire. This is followed by a detailed analysis of the building of the Carrousel itself and an extensive discussion of the author's unique system of constructing the cast-iron arches with a continuous core of laminated wood, the space in between the two elements being filled with hot bitumen.
