Memorial y Informacion sobre las Bobedas debaxo su Cementerio
1635 - Early Lima imprint, not in Sabin or Medina, apparently only copy extant. 1635. Lima. Geronymo de Contreras. In folio (295 mm x 200 mm). 12 ff. Light damp staining throughout, excellent condition overall. First edition. Impossibly rare memorial, unknown to Sabin, Vargas Ugarte and Medina; we are unable to find any other copy. “The Cathedral of Lima had erected some booths and let them as shops in its cemetery, but had been prevented by the City authorities. The above gives a history of the dispute and is a defence of the ecclesiastical authorities” (Maggs, 200, 1922, this copy). Davila (c.1573 – 1647) was Canon of the Cathedral of Lima and also author of the “Tratado de los Euangelios que nuestra Madre la Iglesia propone en todo el año. : explicase el Euangelio y se pone vn sermon en cada vno en las lenguas castellana y general de los indios deste Reyno del Peru. Por D. Francisco Davila” (Lima, 1648, published posthumously). According to Medina (Lima, 289) Davila, a natural of Cuzco, dedicated a considerable portion of his life to the predication and conversion of the Indians, from 1596 to 1646. The imprint is not to be found in WorldCat or Spanish Institutions. It would appear to be the only extant copy. Not in Sabin. Not in Palau. Not in Medina, La Imprenta en Lima. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
